Couples who play together, stay together.

One of the best ways to build or rekindle the spark in a relationship is to frequently spend time together. It doesn’t require expensive gifts, long-thought out dates, or elaborate plans. It can be as simple as just hanging out. There’s a reason why we date before shacking up, and a lot of it has to do with social psychology, interpersonal attraction and plain ole’ human chemistry.

We gradually fall in love with someone we spend time with, and the more time couples spend together, the more often someone sees another person, the more attractive and likeable they find that person.

It’s called the familiarity principle, or the mere-exposure effect and it applies to an array of human behavior from marketing to psychology.

So, if you want to ignite and re-ignite the spark, do things together.

Here are a few ideas on how to build a relationship:
  • Go see a movie.
  • Take a trip together.
  • Rent an Airbnb.
  • Go camping.
  • Plan an adventure.
  • Spend the night or weekend in a hotel.
  • Have a picnic.
  • Build a campfire.
  • Go on a bike ride.
  • Play a board game.
  • Cook a meal together.
  • Share a spa experience.
  • Get away from your responsibilities for the afternoon.
  • Develop a new hobby together.

If you the two of you enjoy different activities and it’s harder to find something you mutually enjoy, make a list of activities you both enjoy. Think back to what brought you together in the first place, your first few dates, the big activities or trips you’ve taken (the road trip to the coast), and the small meaningful activities you shared throughout your relationship (sitting together on the porch after dinner).

The key is to be together, just the two of you.

Leave the kids at home. Leave your problems at home. Don’t check your phone. Don’t
argue.  Just enjoy the date for what it is and what it brings. You can make it a weekly date, a bi-monthly, or get creative, just get away and do it.

Together.
